Phonologically Conditioned Morphological Process in Modern Standard Arabic: an Analysis of Al-ibdaal 'substitution' in Ftaʕal Pattern Using Prosodic Morphology
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper provides an analysis of Al-ibdaal 'substitution' phenomenon found in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) derivational processes, particularly, in the pattern ftaʕal. Al-ibdaal 'substitution' is defined in many Arabic morphological books (Al-Raagihi, 1984; Al-Galaayiini, 1991) as removing a letter and replacing it by another. For example, the /t/ in ztaha: is replaced by /d/ resulting in zdaha: 'flourished'. The paper analyzed examples of words representing the pattern ftaʕal based on prosodic morphology; an approach used to describe non-concatenative morphological processes as those found in Arabic and other Semitic languages (McCarthy, 1981). The analysis of the words revealed that there is actually no substitution of sounds and the change that takes place in that pattern is phonologically motivated. The paper recommends the reconsideration of the concept of Alibdaal 'substitution' in the pattern ftaʕal in Arabic morphological books.

متن کاملXMODEL: An XML-based Morphological Analyzer for Arabic Language
Morphological analysis is an essential stage in language engineering applications. For the Arabic language, this stage is not easy to develop because the Arabic language has some particularities such as the phenomena of agglutination and a lot of morphological ambiguity phenomenon. These reasons make the design of the morphological analyzer for Arabic somewhat difficult and require lots of othe...
متن کاملDeveloping a New System for Arabic Morphological Analysis and Generation
Arabic morphology poses special challenges to computational natural language processing systems. Its rich morphology and the highly complex word formation process of roots and patterns make computational approaches to Arabic very challenging. In this paper we present an approach for morphological analysis and generation of Modern Standard Arabic (MSA). Our approach is based on Arabic morphologi...
متن کاملEffect of Mechanical Milling on the Morphologyand Structural Evaluation of Al-Al2O3 Nanocomposite Powders
The morphological and microstructural changes during mechanical milling of Al powder mixed with 2.5, 5 and 10 wt.% Al2O3 particles were studied. The milling was performed in a planetary ball mill for various times up to 20 h. The produced composite powders were investigated using X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD) to elucidate the role of particle size, secondary phase content and milling time on ...
متن کاملProsodic Inheritance And Morphological Generalisations
Prosodic Inheritance (PI) morphology provides uniform treatment of both concatenative and non-concatenative morphological and phonological generalisations using default inheritance. Models of an extensive range of German Umlaut and Arabic intercalation facts, implemented in DATR, show that the PI approach also covers 'hard cases' more homogeneously and more extensively than previous computation...
